Citizenship

As the rights of the Métis are recognized in the courts and by governments across the homeland, the Métis Nation - Saskatchewan, along with the other governing member organizations, are attempting to clarify the identity of the citizens within the Métis Nation and identify those individuals who would be allowed to access any rights or priviledges as part of the Métis Nation. While there has long been an informal understanding within the Métis Nation of who its citizens are, the Métis Nation - Saskatchewan is formalizing the registry of its citizenship, a process laid out in the Citizenship Act. In this effort, a Citizenship Application Form and Citizenship Card have been designed for citizens of the Métis Nation - Saskatchewan. The application form and guidelines for completion of the form are available here for your review. The actual forms can be obtained by contacting the Registrar at the Métis Nation - Saskatchewan Head Office in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

As it currently stands, the Citizenship Act which was enacted in November of 1999 sets out a clause for the grandfathering of all members as currently listed with the various Métis Locals. This clause identifies a timeline which is set aside to allow all members of the Métis Locals to formally register with the Registrar as part of the new Citizenship Act legislation. The grandfathering period will end on November 2001, at which time the citizenship lists will become the official registry of the Métis in Saskatchewan. In the event that the Métis Nation Legislative Assembly determines that the timeline is unachievable, they may consider a further extension of the grandfather clause. All citizens are encouraged to apply at their earliest convenience.
